Serving Sizes of Common Foods

    Listed below are typical food serving sizes to help you guage how much to serve yourself and your family when following the Food Pyramid Guidelines.

Breads, cereals and other grain products
(Select 6 - 11 servings daily)
1 slice bread
1/2 hamburger bun or English muffin
6 small crackers
1/2 cup cooked cereal
3/4 - 1 cup dry cereal
1/2 cup rice or pasta
Fruits
(Select 2 - 4 servings daily)
1 whole medium fruit
1/2 larger fruit
1/2 cup fresh berries
1/2 cup canned fruit
1/2 cup juice
1/3 cup dried fruit
Vegetables
(Select 3 - 5 servings daily)
1/2 cup cooked or chopped raw vegetables
1 cup leafy raw vegetable

 

 


Milk, cheese and yogurt

(Select 2 - 3 servings daily)
1 cup milk
8 oz or 1 cup yogurt
1-2 ounces cheese

 

 

Meat, fish, poultry, dry beans, eggs and nuts
(Select 2 - 3 servings daily)
2-3 ounces lean meat, fish or poultry
1 egg = approximately 1 ounce meat
1/2 cup cooked dry beans = 1 ounce meat
